[2022-04-11] One task you can't outsource
You can outsource many tasks: processing your income tax return, cleaning your house, walking your dog. But one task you can't outsource is taking care of your health. Only you can attend your doctor's appointments, go to the lab for blood work, undergo tests, and follow through with treatment.
You can get help with aspects of your health by, for example, having someone else make appointments, remind you of the timing of your tests and treatments, and participate in discussions with healthcare professionals to take notes and ask questions. On the preventive side, you can have a buddy who inspires you to eat well, exercise and get enough sleep. You can reach out to friends and family to bolster your mental health. But it's up to you to take the lead in maintaining your health.
It's easy to put off health-related responsibilities as life's routines—work, family, volunteer commitments—consume the majority of your time. It's also understandable that you may avoid medical appointments and tests; after all, who wants bad news? But information allows you to take action—early.
Taking care of your body is like owning a car. You can pay someone to change your oil, rotate your tires and fix your brakes, but you have to stay on top of your vehicle's maintenance schedule and get it to the shop when needed. You have to heed the warning signs and respond appropriately. You need to consult professionals when things get complicated.
Unlike a car, however, you have only one body. There are no trade-ins. No back-up in case the first car breaks down. No hitching a ride with someone else.
Take care of yourself, and remember that you are the head of your medical team.
