[2023-01-21] Saturday Synopsis #27
This week's Saturday Synopsis takes inspiration from James Clear's 3-2-1 Thursday newsletter. In his weekly email to subscribers, Clear shares "3 ideas, 2 quotes, and 1 question to consider this week."
3 Ideas From Me
It reminded me of something I've said many times when mentoring young people: every day you come to work, you're auditioning for a potential employer. I modified it in recent years to say that everyone you meet in your professional journey is a potential reference. That could be the assistant who escorts you to the room where you will be interviewed, a colleague on an interdepartmental working group, or the boss of another unit.
Some say that love is a verb and that love—the feeling—is the fruit of love, the verb. Perhaps the same could be said of hope. If we think of hope as a verb—have a goal, believe in our power to achieve that goal, take action—then maybe...happiness can follow hope, like one domino toppling another.

2 Quotes From Others
You don't get from friends what you give to them, you get what they have to give.... People can only give you what they have to give.
~ Merle Shain, When Lovers Are Friends
When you stop trying to get from people what they can't give you, you can begin to enjoy what they can offer.
~ Mildred Newman and Bernard Berkowitz with Jean Owen, How to Be Your Own Best Friend
