[2023-01-27] Inner child

The other night at the dinner table, I was making a lot of silly jokes and doing funny voices while we played Jeopardy. My husband and daughter were good sports about it, though they did wonder what had gotten into me. There was no particular reason for my frivolity that evening. I just kept thinking of funny things in succession.

That reminded me of a quote (author unknown) about our inner child:

There is a child inside each one of us, who comes out in front of the person we are most comfortable with.

Sometimes the child inside us is goofy. Sometimes the child is fearful. Sometimes the child is in need of reassurance.

Regardless, it is a gift to be able to express different sides of ourselves—the responsible adult, the ravenous teenager, the vulnerable child—and to have someone in our lives who loves us exactly as we are.

And it is a gift to others when we see the child in them and want nothing more than to laugh with them, to hug them, and to grow old with them.
