[2023-05-16] Healthy eating tips
Tonight, I joined a webinar organized by Ovarian Cancer Canada called Healthy Eating Tips. The event featured Registered Dietitian Karmen More from the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre (PMCC) and Wellness Chef Geremy Capone of PMCC's Cancer Rehabilitation and Survivorship Program.
While Geremy did a live cooking demonstration, Karmen provided nutrition tips, focusing on the needs of cancer patients in active treatment.
Karmen kicked off the session by describing the three things that cancer patients need to pay particular attention to:
- Fluids — maintain hydration (most patients are asked to consume 6-8 cups of fluids per day, which can include water, coffee, tea, soup and smoothies; patients who are struggling to eat can choose drinks that both help them stay hydrated and consume calories).
- Calories — maintain energy and weight (without enough calories, patients risk losing weight).
- Protein — maintain muscle and support healing (protein is the building block for maintaining muscle and healing).
Geremy demonstrated three recipes:
- Roasted Pepper Couscous Salad with Orange Cilantro Dressing
- Sweet Potato Salmon Cakes
- Tropical Coconut Pineapple Smoothie
The format of the event was very effective, with Karmen and Geremy both offering ideas for maximizing the taste and nutrition of various foods.
You can check out videos featuring the combo of a wellness chef and a registered dietitian on the YouTube channel of PMCC's ELLICSR Kitchen. And you can join live sessions the third Thursday of every month. The May 18 session is a partnership with the team from PMCC's Gynecology Oncology Clinic.
You can also view recipes by meal type and recipes designed to counteract side effects.
