[2023-05-17] Shine brightly
On this, the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, I share this excerpt from Max Ehrmann's poem "Desiderata - Words for Life":
You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
Ehrmann wrote the poem—published in 1927—for his daughter, to provide advice on how to live a happy life. His reference to stars brought to mind this quote by Leslie Esperanza Espaillat:
Stand in your light and shine brightly because that is how you defeat darkness.
Today is a day to shine brightly and to add our light to that of many others, and—in doing so—help to defeat darkness.
