[2023-07-17] Sweet treats and recovery day 10

Today's "first" since surgery was baking on my own. Granted, it was an easy recipe (Raspberry Crumble Cookies). Still, doing anything on my own is a sign of my continued recovery. It reminded me of the quote: "Success is a series of small wins." (Author unknown.)

I baked because my mom and my sister were coming for a visit—a belated celebration of my birthday. A visit isn't a visit without a cup of tea and a little sweet treat.

I remind myself of an older woman whom we used to visit when I was young. She and her husband lived in Pakenham, Ontario. She always had tea (strong, black tea in a big kettle) and copious amounts of desserts and homemade bread on hand should someone stop by. It was impossible to visit this couple without eating something: a soft roll with butter or a piece of cake. That's the kind of kitchen I've always aspired to have—warm, welcoming and full of delicious food.

I had a short night owing to my listening to an Agatha Christie murder mystery. "I'll just drift off to sleep in a few minutes," I had thought. But I didn't. I became enthralled by the story, listening to it until its conclusion some 90 minutes later.

So tonight will be an early night, and I will not listen to another murder mystery. I'll go back to the very educational and very soporific Portuguese vocabulary.
