[2023-12-04] Reclaiming our power

I spent a chunk of my evening speaking with a young woman who finds herself in an awful situation at work—facing criticism, gaslighting and micromanagement. I listened, I commiserated and I validated.

But what impressed me most was the balanced and credible way in which she shared her truth. Though she said that she felt beaten down, bullied and afraid to do her job, she also sounded like a young woman who was ready to reclaim her power. Indeed, she had already taken some steps to do so and left our conversation with additional ideas to pursue. I cheered, I encouraged and I approved.

The biggest barrier to change—and, often, it's only by changing ourselves internally that we can change our situation externally—is believing that there's nothing we can change. There's always something, however small, that we can do to make a situation just a little bit better. And that's how we begin to reclaim our power.
