[2023-12-15] Therapy through club sandwiches
Jay MacPherson is looking for the best club sandwich in Ottawa. And he's documenting his search in a Facebook group that has more than 1,600 members.
One man's quest for the perfect club sandwich might not be a compelling story, except that Jay has Stage 4 cancer. He was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2021. Despite treatment, his cancer has spread to his liver and lungs. He told CBC News recently: "I only have so much time left, it's not going to make a difference in my life now, so I'm going to enjoy food while I can."
He said he turned to club sandwiches, which he had always liked, as a way of treating himself while going through cancer treatment. In his Facebook group, which he calls Clubbing with Cancer, MacPherson shares where he's been—often "tiny little family spots that people don't know about"—and what he thinks of the club sandwiches he's eaten. Members post their own reviews and make suggestions to Jay on places he should try next. Some share their own stories of dealing with cancer and provide support to each other.
Jay says: "It's been really therapeutic dealing with the anxiety of cancer treatments—blogging about the cancer and going out and doing fun things."
