[2024-04-09] Start where you stand

This quote is fitting for my day.

Do not wait; the time will never be ‘just right.' Start where you stand, and work with whatever tools you may have at your command, and better tools will be found as you go along.
— Napoleon Hill

Perhaps it is fitting for yours.

Sometimes when I'm trying to solve a problem, I lull myself into believing that planning is progress. To be fair, planning is almost always helpful; indeed, it's often essential. As a natural planner, I usually start projects by doing research, writing an outline, or drawing up a list. I'm not about to skip planning altogether and simply launch into doing.

At the same time, however, I know how easy it is to become paralyzed by planning: searching, drafting, sketching. A hunt for the best strategy can defer the application of any strategy.

While I spent some time planning my route today, I also adjusted my sails as I encountered unexpected headwinds. It worked—in part because I kept my expectations modest. Progress is progress, no matter how small.

And then I posted a sticky on my wall to remind myself:
  1. Start where you stand
  2. Work with what you've got
  3. Trust that better strategies will emerge over time
