[2024-04-30] The ugliest man in the world

I love hearing my mom laugh. Sometimes on our daily calls, she remembers a funny story. Once she starts laughing, I can't help but chuckle myself.

Such was the case today when she recounted a humorous story about a Christmas skit that she and her classmates had put on at Algonquin College in Perth, where she had gone in 1977 to upgrade her skills.

Having recently heard about a skit called the Ugliest Man in the World, Olivette proposed it to her classmates. The premise (which is ably described in this webpage from the Boy Scouts) was that the person hiding under a blanket was the ugliest man in the world.

Appointed the spokesperson by her classmates, Olivette invited various students, in turn, to view the hidden figure. Each time, the student would peer under the blanket, let out a scream and recoil in disgust.

Finally, Olivette invited the teacher to have a look. When he did so, the man under the blanket screamed, threw off his cover and ran away. The implication was that the teacher—the only person not in on the joke—was so ugly that even the heretofore ugliest man in the world was horrified.

Olivette said that the teacher was a good sport about the gag, which proved to be the funniest skit in the Christmas gathering.
