[2024-08-22] Greg's Day 2024
August 22 is Greg's Day—the day each year, more than any other day, that I pause to remember my treasured brother Greg. He's been gone for five years, but I remember him as though he's been gone for only five minutes.
Author Bruce Coville said of love and loss:
Nothing you love is lost. Not really. Things, people—they always go away, sooner or later. You can't hold them, any more than you can hold moonlight. But if they've touched you, if they're inside you, then they're still yours. The only things you ever really have are the ones you hold inside your heart.
And that's where Greg rests. On days like today, when my love for him is too big to hold within my heart, it spills out in tears. But just a few. I take comfort in looking at photos of Greg—seeing his smile, recalling funny things he said, appreciating all the good he brought to the world.
Greg's love is not lost. It lives on in all the people who loved him. Who still love him. Who will always love him.
