[2024-08-23] Bee Gees tribute band brings back memories
Tonight, Chris and I took in Night Fever, the Bee Gees tribute band playing at the Nostalgia music festival in Ottawa.
The band played many of the Bee Gees top hits—such as "Night Fever," "You Should Be Dancing" and "Nights on Broadway"—as well as songs written by the Bee Gees but recorded by other artists—such as "Grease" (Frankie Valli), "Islands in the Stream" (Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton) and "I Just Want to Be Your Everything" (Andy Gibb).
When the band began playing its encore number ("Tragedy"), I immediately thought of our family's connection to the song. On our long-haul trips to Chris' family cottage in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region of Quebec, we played a lot of music. This included Bee Gees hits from the '60s and '70s. Whenever "Tragedy" came up in rotation, my son would do a head-banging move, which we found hilarious. My daughter described Shane's move as "nod nod nod, shake shake shake shake shake."
Tonight, I recorded a short video of Night Fever's performance of "Tragedy" and sent it to my kids without comment. They both understood right away why I had sent it. Mel's reply: "Oh awesome!" Shane's response: "The guy in front isn't doing it right."
We are blessed with many fabulous musical festivals in Ottawa. Not only does this give us a chance to hear great music, but it also allows us to reconnect with old friends and even older memories.
