[2024-09-11] 8:00 AM surgery
My surgery is scheduled for 8:00 AM tomorrow at the Queensway Carleton Hospital. My arrival time is 6:30 AM.
I plan to arise at 5:00 AM, drink the recommended 1½ cups of ginger ale, take an anti-nausea medication called Emend (which is the same drug I used to take before each chemotherapy treatment), shower using a surgical scrub called Endure, put on my friendship pyjamas and head to the hospital shortly after 6:00.
I imagine that I will be home by suppertime.
Today was another day of nesting: cleaning, baking and getting my hospital bag ready for tomorrow. In addition to getting my stuff in order, all this activity had the added benefit of giving me something to do with my nervous energy. Though I haven't been worried about the surgery, I will admit to feeling a teensy bit of apprehension this morning.
I take comfort in knowing that I tolerate pain well, and that I am well stocked with pain medication. I know that my body is remarkably efficient at healing. I have my husband and daughter to take care of me, and my son is not far. And I have an extended network of family, friends and neighbours who would support me if needed.
When I called the hospital today to find out the time of my surgery, the booking professional provided all the information I needed. After we hung up, she called me right back to say, "I'm sorry. I hung up too fast. I wanted to wish you a good day." I thought that was adorable.
