3 Ideas From Me
What my experience over the past six months has taught me is that I am in charge of my health. Here are some tips for managing your healthcare and helping to ensure the best outcome.
- Keep medical records.
- Track your medications.
- Note side effects.
- Invite a family member to listen in on appointments with healthcare providers.
- Write down your questions.
- Go for your tests.
When we internalize the belief that we must always present a brave face, we may end up brushing off our problems rather than facing them, hiding our true feelings behind more socially acceptable emotions, or feeling guilty about being sad, angry or disappointed.
Oprah Winfrey said: "The struggle of my life created empathy—I could relate to pain, being abandoned, having people not love me." For me, the struggle of facing cancer created empathy—I can relate to worry, fear and sadness associated with an illness or the threat of disease. Becoming more empathic is the silver lining in the cloud that is cancer.
2 Quotes From Others
Life doesn't always get better.
But you do. You get stronger.
You get wiser. You get softer.
With tattered wings you rise.
And the world watches in wonder
at the breathless beauty of
a human who survived life.
~ L.R. Knost
Three things to consider before calling someone lazy:
- What may seem lazy might really be a coping skill for a mental health issue. Resting can help someone recover from burnout. Depression can make just getting out of bed challenging. You never know what someone may be going through and silently struggling with.
- People with ADHD can have a hard time completing tasks. This doesn't mean they are lazy. Someone with ADHD may be trying really hard. And labeling their behaviors as unmotivated or lazy can be hurtful.
- Calling someone lazy means you don't respect how they spend their time. Usually the word lazy is used to try to manipulate someone into a desired action. It also can be a subtle form of bullying. People don't need your permission to rest.
