[2023-06-03] Saturday Synopsis #46
Today, my daughter and I traveled to Perth for the Pride Parade and to soak up the scenes and savours of the town. Watching, and subsequently walking in, the Pride Parade was a beautiful experience—one full of positivity, acceptance and respect for diversity. Our entire day was magical (more on that in a future post). The photo in tonight's visual is from the parade. Happy Pride Month!
3 Ideas From Me
If you suspect that you are burnt out, look for physical, emotional and behavioural signs. Physically, you may feel tired and drained most of the time, experience frequent headaches or muscle pain, get sick more often, or see a change in your appetite and sleep habits. Emotionally, you may feel helpless and hopeless, detached and alone, cynical and negative, and you may experience a sense of failure and self-doubt, a loss of motivation, or a decrease in satisfaction and feelings of accomplishment. Behaviourally, you may step back from responsibilities, withdraw from others, procrastinate, use food, drugs or alcohol to cope, take your frustrations out on others, or skip part or all of your workday.
I've gotten better at [saying no] since going through cancer. The life-threatening nature of the disease makes it easier to set priorities and stick with them. I still occasionally accept to take on tasks I shouldn't, but I'm now much more aware of what I'm giving up by saying yes to a given request. Saying no to something I don't want to do means I'm saying yes to the kind of peaceful life I wish to enjoy.
Others may be experiencing challenges at work or in their relationships. They may find themselves at a crossroads, with a precarious future. In moments like these, it may be helpful to remember that the future doesn't just happen to us; we have a hand in shaping it. We can create the plan or take the steps to overcome the obstacles that stand in the way of our being the person we want to be: gainfully employed in a job that suits us, happily coupled or happily single. It's up to us to take note of the lessons, learn from our mistakes and get back up when we encounter setbacks. It's up to us to ask, whenever we're in the midst of a challenging situation, "what is this here to teach me?"
